What you'll be doing

Role Purpose:

As a Temporary Works Designer, you work with the various sections within the Regional Business to deliver technical support and service to site teams and Work Winning Team. This includes input to Permanent Works where there is an interface with Temporary Works methodology and sequencing. Temporary Works support Balfour Beatty Regional Businesses such as Balfour Beatty Power, Rail and Major Projects as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for meeting temporary works design requirements and delivering them to time and budget.
  • Investigate alternative designs for temporary works, working with the site teams.
  • Report on the progress of designs.
  • Ensure a suitable temporary works design brief and programme of requirements is received. This will often require site visits to review and discuss with Project Team / TWC
  • Ensure design risks are considered and prepare Designers Risk Assessments, communicating residual design risks as appropriate e.g on drawings.
  • Ensure that contract-specified design checks are carried out and provide the appropriate manager with completed check certificates.
  • Provide strong technical support in value engineering temporary works and in identifying innovative and robust solutions.
  • Support temporary works assurance on projects through conducting audits and regular meetings with project teams, identifying best practice, areas for improvement and areas of concern.
  • Ensures a relentless focus on Zero Harm
  • Support the delivery of Sustainability activities


Who we're looking for

Essential:

  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Knowledge and experience in use of Standards e.g Eurocodes, BS`s, DMRB, CIRIA,CPA
  • Can demonstrate an awareness of methodology costs and understanding of the importance of option reviews.
  • Previous experience of site-based activities, ideally having spent significant time earlier in career involved in site engineering / management.
  • Maintains up to date technical knowledge. CPD recording.
  • Strong numeracy capability and able to use analysis software e.g CADS pile wall suite, Autocad, Civils 3D, Revit, Robot...
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office software, especially Excel, Word, Teams and PowerPoint
  • Good report writing skills
  • Holding a valid CSCS card to visit sites is mandatory.
  • Pays attention to detail and will see tasks through to completion.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to tight timescales.
  • Is a self-starter who can manage their own time and proactively seeks and executes activities that will add value to their function.


The following qualities/experience are desirable:

  • A degree in a relevant engineering discipline e.g achieved CEng MICE, is desirable; membership of a relevant professional body is advantageous.
  • Ability to produce temporary works engineering drawings using Autodesk AutoCAD and / or Civils 3D software.
  • Knowledge of the construction industry or experience within a project-based organisation.
